I am really excited to say that the energy resources sector competitiveness plan developed and published by National Energy Resources Australia (NERA) was been released on 22nd February. For the past few months I have had the opportunity to act as the lead author of the report, which looks at opportunities and challenges facing the Australian energy resources sector in a comprehensive and holistic manner. NERA are an industry growth centre established by the Australian federal government, and the report examines the opportunities and challenges faced by the oil, gas, coal and uranium industries in Australia over the coming ten years.
The plan looks at the current global megatrends which are impacting the energy sector, then moves down to national trends and those specific to each of the industries then looks at the actions the industry can and should be considering to build for a more sustainable future. In preparing the document we spoke to representatives of all different facets of the industry; the owners of the plants, the suppliers of services and equipment to the plants, the education, training and research organisations who provide skilled personnel and solutions to technical challenges and to the members of the communities who rely on the industry to support their communities. The knowledge priorities, focus areas and initiatives that emerged from all of these discussions and the associated desktop research are set out in the document in considerable detail.
The report is very extensive and offers insights into many different facets of the overall energy resources sector in Australia. It will be refreshed annually to reflect ongoing changes in society and the sector.
